Teepees are made out of ninety year old Balsam Fur trees. These trees grow in Canada,
and are used because they last a long time which will make the teepees last longer.
The Balsam Fur trees were filled with sap. To build a teepee you will
need seventeen poles of the Balsam Fur tree. The poles have to be very smooth and twenty-six feet tall. To
cover up the poles many people would usually use buffalo skin to keep the inside of the teepee very warm. (The
reenactors used canvas instead.) These poles were very hard to carry so people used dogs to carry the poles. The
dogs could only carry one pole at a time. Because the people needed more than
one pole, they started to use horses. The horses could carry two poles at one time.

What activities
do you do in your spare time?
What activities do you enjoy? Well, many years ago, people would play
instruments, sports, and games (cards) in their spare time. We met a gentleman who liked to play a musical instrument,
which was the fiddle. He entertained the youth and elderly by playing many different tunes on this wooden instrument.
What’s your religion? Religion
was a very important part of their daily life. Most of the people around Fort
de Chartres went to church and were catholic. There was a church located inside
Fort de Chartres.

What is your day like?
Today, you can go to a local
grocery store and buy your food. You might even go out to a restaurant and enjoy
a nice cooked meal. But, back in time, in the mid 1700s people had to grow, raise,
hunt, and cook all your meals. Almost all of the food was prepared by the women. Two types of food that the women made were boiled potatoes and chicken. Instead of, using a microwave, you would use a fire grate which would keep the pans off of the fire. You would place a brazier on top of the fire grate to cook your meal on. At your home today you would most likely use an electric or a gas oven that would be located inside your
house. Cooks would place their prepared meal inside of a brick oven. A brick oven is most likely made out of stone. What animals
do you have? Well, people at the fort would gather and raise different animals. One of the main animals they raised, was chickens. Chickens were brought over from France to America. How do you wash your hair? Many years
ago, people would take buckets full of water and would probably have someone dump the water over your head. Then, they would wash their hair with the soap that they previously made.
Do you have a hard life? Well, they definitely did!
